Intel presenta il chip XMM 8160: sarà il modem del primo iPhone 5G?

Il 2019 sarà un anno fondamentale per il 5G, e Intel, una delle aziende più impegnate nel settore della connettività, ha annunciato il suo modem di nuova generazione. L’XMM 8160 sarà pronto per i produttori nella seconda metà del 2019, ma il chip sarà probabilmente utilizzato su smartphone solo nel 2020. Sarà questo il modem del primo iPhone 5G?

Intel ha grandi ambizioni per il suo processore XMM 8160, da utilizzare su smartphone, computer e altri prodotti in grado di sfruttare la tecnologia capace di raggiungere una velocità di 6 gigabit al secondo.

Attualmente sono diverse le aziende intenzionate a sfruttare la potenza del 5G, come Samsung, Nokia/HMD, Sony, Xiaomi, LG e OnePlus. Queste stanno hanno già avviato una collaborazione con Qualcomm per adottare i modem Snapdragon X50 5G NR. Samsung e Huawei, inoltre, starebbero lavorando a chip prodotti in proprio.

Per quanto riguarda Apple, l’azienda di Cupertino ha iniziato ad utilizzare esclusivamente processori Intel con iPhone XS e XR, e potrebbe decidere di portare avanti la partnership anche per il primo smartphone 5G, optando appunto per il modem XMM 8160 5G.
