Il rover Perseverance atterrato su Marte utilizza lo stesso processore dell’iMac G3 del 1998

Perseverance, il rover della NASA che ha raggiunto Marte il 18 febbraio, è alimentato dallo stesso processore PowerPC 750 che si trovava all’interno dell’iconico iMac G3 del 1998.

Come riportato da NewScientist, il rover Mars Perseverance utilizza le CPU RISC su cui Apple faceva affidamento prima di passare a Intel. L’iMac G3 era caratterizzato da una scocca semitrasparente e, come ben ricordiamo, salvò Apple dalla bancarotta.

Il PowerPC 750 era un processore single-core a 233 MHz con 6 milioni di transistor, che ora è considerato lento, ma è stato il primo a incorporare la previsione dinamica dei rami che è ancora utilizzato nei processori moderni.

Dato che il lancio di Perseverance è avvenuto nel luglio 2020, molti si staranno chiedendo perché sta utilizzando un processore così vecchio. Il motivo? L‘affidabilità.

C’è anche una differenza piuttosto grande tra la CPU dell’iMac G3 e quella del rover. Questo chip PowerPC 750 può resistere a temperature comprese tra -55 e 125 gradi Celsius.

Apple ha utilizzato i chip PowerPC sui Mac fino al 2005, anno in cui annunciò la transizione verso i chip prodotti da Intel.
